Can I scrap a car that isn't registered in my name?

Scrapping a partner's, parent's or newly bought car that is not in your name is often possible. Here is what the yard needs to see.

Often, yes, as long as you have the right to get rid of it. That usually means the registered keeper has agreed, or you can show the car now belongs to you. Licensed scrap yards have to check who they are buying from, so be ready to explain the situation and show some paperwork.

Is the registered keeper the same as the owner?

Not always. The V5C logbook names the registered keeper: the person responsible for taxing the car and dealing with the DVLA. The logbook itself says it is not proof of ownership.

So a car can belong to you while still being registered to someone else. Common examples:

  • You bought it but the logbook was never updated
  • It is a family car registered to a partner, parent or grown-up child
  • You were given it and the change of keeper was never sent off

It also works the other way: being named on the logbook does not always mean you own the car outright, for example if it is still on finance.

Why do licensed yards check?

Every collecting yard in our network is a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility, regulated by the Environment Agency in England, SEPA in Scotland or Natural Resources Wales in Wales. As registered scrap metal dealers, they must check and record the identity of the person they buy from.

Those checks exist to stop stolen cars being scrapped. They also protect you: once a car has been crushed, nobody can undo it, so the yard wants to be sure the person handing it over is entitled to.

What will I need to show?

It depends on why the car is not in your name.

The keeper is alive and happy for it to go

  • The V5C, if it can be found
  • A signed note from the registered keeper saying they agree to the car being scrapped, with their name and address
  • ID with your photo on it, plus a recent bill or statement showing where you live

The simplest route is for the keeper to be there at collection, if that is practical.

You bought the car and never registered it

  • A receipt, bill of sale, or texts and emails about the sale
  • The new keeper slip, if the seller gave you one
  • ID with your photo on it, plus a recent bill or statement showing where you live

The registered keeper has died

  • The DVLA has separate guidance for this. The executor or administrator has the final say over the car, and gov.uk explains how to write to the DVLA's Sensitive Casework Team about a bereavement.

Tell the collecting yard about the situation when they ring to arrange collection, so they can say exactly what they need.

When can I not scrap a car that isn't mine?

There are some situations where you will need to sort things out first:

  • The car is on finance. Until the last payment is made, the lender is the legal owner. See our finance guide for the ways round this.
  • The car has been abandoned on your land or street. However annoying it is, you have no right to dispose of it. Contact your local council, which deals with abandoned vehicles.
  • The keeper does not agree. If there is a dispute about who owns the car, it needs settling before any yard will take it.
  • It is a company or lease car. The leasing or fleet company has to authorise it.

Who gets the money and the paperwork?

The collecting yard pays by bank transfer within 24 hours of collection, never cash, because cash for scrap cars is illegal. Make sure you and the registered keeper have agreed whose bank account the money goes to before you accept the price.

The yard notifies the DVLA, and the Certificate of Destruction is recorded on your booking and emailed to you. If you are not the keeper, pass a copy on to them; it shows the car has been destroyed and they are off the hook for it. Any road tax refund is sent by the DVLA to the name and address on the logbook.

Quick answers

Can I scrap my partner's car? Yes, with their agreement. A signed note from them, plus the logbook and your ID, is usually what the yard asks for.

Can I scrap a car I bought but never registered? Usually, if you have something showing you bought it, such as a receipt or texts from the person who sold it.

Can I scrap an abandoned car on my driveway? No. Report it to your local council, which has powers to deal with abandoned vehicles.

Who receives the road tax refund? The DVLA sends it to the registered keeper shown on the logbook.
