Can I scrap a car without the keys?

Lost the keys? A licensed yard can usually still collect and scrap your car. Here is what to mention and what to have ready.
Usually, yes. Licensed yards collect cars without keys regularly, using recovery equipment to load them. What matters is telling the yard there are no keys before collection day, and being able to show the car is yours, because a missing key is one of the things yards look at when checking a car has not been stolen.
Why does a missing key matter at all?
For scrapping, the key is not needed to start the car; it is going on a truck either way. The key matters for two practical reasons:
- Moving the car. Without a key, the steering may be locked, the gearbox may be stuck in gear or park, and the handbrake may be on. That makes it harder to roll the car onto a truck.
- Checking ownership. Licensed scrap dealers must check who they are buying from. A car with no keys gets a closer look, so having your documents ready makes things quicker.
How does the yard load a car without keys?
Recovery drivers have ways of moving cars that will not roll freely, such as winches and wheel skates or dollies placed under locked wheels. The right method depends on where the car is and how it is stuck.
To help the driver, tell the yard:
- Whether the steering is locked
- Whether it is an automatic stuck in park, or a manual left in gear
- If the handbrake is on, or the wheels have seized after standing a long time
- If any tyres are flat
- Where the car is parked, especially if it is in a garage, back lane or tight space
The collecting yard rings you after you accept the price, which is a good time to go over this.
What do I need to prove the car is mine?
Keep the following to hand for when the truck arrives:
- The V5C logbook, when you still have it. The driver takes it, and you tear off and hold on to the yellow motor-trade slip
- Photo ID, for example your passport or photocard licence
- Proof of address, ideally the address on the logbook
If you have no logbook either, photo ID and proof of address can be accepted instead. It can also help to have something that ties you to the car, such as an old insurance document, a service receipt or a purchase receipt.
What if the keys were stolen?
If the keys were taken in a burglary or the car was stolen and later recovered, check your position before scrapping:
- Talk to your insurer first. If you have made a claim and been paid out, the car may now belong to the insurer, not you.
- Make sure any police report is resolved. A car still recorded as stolen will be flagged during the yard's checks.
If the car is simply old and the keys went missing years ago, none of this applies. Just say so when the yard calls.
Does no keys change the price?
The price you see comes from the rates that licensed yards covering your postcode district have set, and those are based mainly on the car's weight and metal. A missing key does not change what the car weighs.
What is worth mentioning is anything that makes collection harder, such as a car that cannot be rolled at all, or one in a spot a truck cannot easily reach. Being upfront means the yard sends the right vehicle and there are no surprises on the day.
What happens after it is collected?
The car goes to a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility, regulated by the Environment Agency in England, SEPA in Scotland or Natural Resources Wales in Wales.
- You are paid by bank transfer within 24 hours of collection, never in notes, since paying cash for scrap cars is against the law.
- The yard tells the DVLA the car has been scrapped.
- The Certificate of Destruction is recorded on your booking and emailed to you.
If you find the keys after the car has gone, you can simply throw them away. With the car crushed, they open nothing.
