in Manchester

The north and east of Manchester — Cheetham Hill to Gorton, Blackley to Levenshulme — is where the city’s cars get scrapped: terrace streets, tight parking, and the yards close by on the Oldham and Ashton roads. The east side of the M60

The A62 Oldham Road, the A662 to Ashton and the A57 Hyde Road run out of the city past the yards, and the M60 loops round the outside, so a collector is never far from an M11 or M40 postcode. The site prices your car against every licensed yard covering the district and shows the top figure; that yard rings to agree a day, usually within one to three days.

The districts

M4 is Ancoats and Miles Platting; M8 Cheetham Hill and Crumpsall; M9 Blackley and Harpurhey; M40 Moston, New Moston and Newton Heath; M11 Clayton, Openshaw and Beswick around the stadium; M12 Ardwick and Longsight; M18 Gorton and Abbey Hey; M19 Levenshulme and Burnage. Permit zones, resident bays and double-parked terraces are the normal conditions, and the driver works round them — say which street and whether the car rolls. Match days around the Etihad close roads; the yard plans around them.

City cars at the end

High-mileage private hire cars and old taxis, small hatchbacks that have done ten years of city driving, diesel family cars failed on emissions, and the cars that have been sitting on a street for months collecting tickets. All are priced by weight, make, age and what is still fitted — a car with its catalytic converter is worth more than one without, and the number of cats stolen in M8 and M9 means that question matters here. Non-runners are winched; vans from the Cheetham Hill and Newton Heath trade go through the same form and can be invoiced.

Paid within 24 hours, by a licensed yard

The collector is an Authorised Treatment Facility. Photo ID and proof of address for the registered keeper, bank transfer within 24 hours of collection — cash for scrap has been illegal since 2013 — and the Certificate of Destruction issued with the DVLA told. No logbook? The ID check covers it.

Questions

What people in Manchester ask

Does this page cover south Manchester or the city centre?

It covers the north and east — the M4, M8, M9, M11, M12, M18, M19 and M40 districts. Enter any Manchester postcode and the site tells you straight away whether a collector on the network covers it; coverage follows which yards are signed up at the time.

The car is in a permit zone and I do not have a permit for a recovery truck. Is that a problem?

No. The driver loads from the street in the time it takes, as recovery vehicles do every day in Manchester. Tell the yard the street and any bay restrictions when it rings.

Can a car with parking tickets or a clamp be scrapped?

Tickets, yes — they are the keeper’s to settle and do not stop the sale. A clamped car has to be released by whoever clamped it before a collector can move it.

How soon can you get to Manchester?

Enter your registration and postcode for today's position in Manchester. Where a licensed yard covers your district, collection is usually within one to three days of accepting the price: the yard rings to agree a day and again before setting off. If no yard covers it yet, leave your details and we ring you the moment one does.

Do you charge for collection in Manchester?

Collection is free wherever a licensed yard covers your postcode: the truck is part of the collector's price. No yard covers Manchester at the moment, so enter your postcode for today's position, or leave your details and we ring you as soon as one does.
